Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, Parigi - Ente Maison de L'Italie - 2013 - 3800 sm
After having been countless times as a visitor, I return to this place as a designer.
The institution sets out the problem to be solved: the current building, designed by Piero Portaluppi, requires an expansion to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for student rooms.
Ambitious program, exasperating constraints, impossible context. Not far away, the Maison of Switzerland, Brazil and Holland are very visible: Le Corbusier, Costa, Dudok the Authors! The theme of the contextual relationship, direct and indirect, is therefore fundamental: we opt for the construction of a new building, leaving the original intact. Above a base that allows us anyway the "contact" stands the new, square-plan body, four floors above ground, suspended on double-height pilotis.
The architecture manifests itself clearly: on the one hand it uses a didactic interpretation of the "five principles", on the other it proposes a paradigmatic and narrative "Italian-style" living dimension.
