In the heart of one of the driest deserts in the world, in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Basayta region, lies a striking landscape. Here, amidst an otherwise inhospitable environment, wheat and vegetables are cultivated, reclaiming desert lands under extreme conditions. The water for irrigation is drawn from fossil reserves—ancient, non-renewable aquifers dating back to the Ice Age—extracted from over a kilometer beneath the desert surface. It is distributed in a circular manner through a technique known as “center-pivot agriculture”, where the irrigation system rotates around a central axis, creating the characteristic perfectly circular fields.
The colors of the fields change depending on their state: green circles indicate active crops, while others represent fields being sown or temporarily fallow. From above, these fields echo the striking geometry of Dubai’s iconic palm-shaped island.
